the graphics dont even look much better

who cares about the graphics when you can play as a strong, independent woman.

Funnily enough I was playing GoW1 last night and was impressed by how visceral the game feels; proper nostalgia vibes.

After I finish GoW1, I'll move onto GoW2 and then forget the the series ever went beyond that. :]

Why ? Gears 3 is fantastic . 4 is ok. 5 is great as well . The only meh one is judgement .

You can nitpick these kinds of decisions in so many different games but a lot of it has to do with period of time and design decisions. Back in 06-11 the huge swing for cosmetic physics was still trending on the heels of Half-Life 2, Far Cry 2, and things like Crysis and the reality is it's only as important as its function relative to its gameplay implementation. Control is a great example of physics playing an integral part of the gameplay loop whereas in Gears it was largely for visual appeal. He's shooting concrete ledges which break apart in the old games and then shooting metal lined ledges in the new one and questioning why they're not breaking.

The "weight" of weapons and actions in the original Gears games produced a very cinematic look and feel but when you go back to it it's kind of nauseating to play, it detracts from playability. It's hard to make out what's going on and what you're doing when firing guns because the screen is shaking all over the place but it's nonsensical because there's no recoil. In Gears 5 the weapons actually have a relatively strong recoil model, you have to compensate for it, the screen shake intensity is relative to what weapon you're using, how it works in the game, it makes sense. The .50 cal MG emplacements shake a bit but they're bolted to the ground so it's not going to violently shake all over the place. The Lancer is a low caliber high rate of fire machine gun so the recoil will be high but the kick will be low. The Ghasher is a high caliber shotgun, it has a high amount of kick so the screen shakes accordingly. The Talon is a low caliber high rate of fire single handed machine pistol so it has a high amount of recoil but again a low amount of kick so limited shaking.

It all makes sense in terms of physicality.

Everything about the original games is exaggerated for presentation and puts the gameplay experience in the back seat, it's a tech demo. Punching people or attacking them with a knife results in violent shaking of the screen? Why? Enemies crawling away and then freaking out making a bunch of screaming noises, huffing and puffing before they die? Why? You crawl away and then just die, that's what would happen. Violently thrashing out of control like you're being ragdolled down a flight of stairs when getting a chainsaw to the chest? Why? Your movements are going to correspond to the actions. As unrealistic as things are in these games in general they've taken a more grounded and realistic approach in 5.

Then we come to the manipulation of water, it still exists in Gears 5 when you're moving around it's just not crazy unrealistic. There's still manipulation it's just lessened, you're not leaving long sweeping and defined trails behind you like a damn Seadoo would at 40 MPH.

Shooting standard glass? It explodes apart from the force straight out of its frame in shards, you can't pick and choose bits to shoot out it just flies apart. Shooting sandbags? Sand doesn't pour out of the bag, the penetration hole is small, clean and nothing comes out. The only time anything will come out is if the round has enough velocity to exit the back of the bag which would leave a gaping hole that sand does come out of.

Blood on the ground? In the original games it was a low resolution 2D decal. in the new games it's a high resolution 3D physical mesh. Which one is better is debatable, and whether or not the latter should stay on the ground is up for debate as well. Given its physicality in 3D space the new one looks better but would run up memory usage if it stayed in place. If you've got 20+ dead enemies exploded all over the environment it can cause slowdowns if it remains.

damn, that makes the game look so underwhelming. Epic was at the top of their game when they were making the series, but The Coalition is simply not as skilled or experienced.

Wrong on so many different levels, you're implying they couldn't do these things. They did all of them in the Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, they stepped away from them and reassessed them for their own games.

Bruh, Phil Spencer wouldn't offer such a vociferous defense of this flop. :rrod:

Do you want something to make sense or not? Well then it needs an explanation. A video with no elaboration paints a picture of ignorance and implicit bias hinging on clickbait tactics for attention.

I don't mind his videos, but taking them at face value is something stupid people would do.

lmao the xbox fanboys at resetera are furious about this, you can tell they’re eager to ban his channel from the forum :D

Rational people are questioning a shitty video without any context or rationalization, shocking.

Are you fucking retarded? They're both Xbox games, they're both from the same franchise. The 'criticism' if it can even be called that is surface level stupidity with no extrapolation as to what is what or why X and Y are happening. The choices behind them, the differences in implementations, the differences in realistic or technological grounding, the differences in function over form and environmental readability.

Anyone can make a lazy nitpick video, actually explaining what's taking place and why though is something else entirely.

anyone can compare/contrast the differences and draw their own conclusions without being spoon fed an essay. he lets the footage speak for itself.
