Nintendo may move away from home console development, says company president

Recommended Posts

It was inevitable that Nintendo would leave hardware, the Switch seems to have been a stop gap so they can get their affairs in order. The reality is no one wants Nintendo hardware they just want their games, it was quite obvious they were going to become a third party software provider, it was generations in the making. They would grow and do better as a company, their software would have much greater exposure and reach, people would once again get to experience Nintendo titles on currently developed hardware platforms. It would be for the best.

Look what it did for Sega, as much as I miss Sega's hardware, their ingenuity and their drive in the hardware business they were much better served as a software company. Sega went out fighting, Nintendo lost themselves back in the early 2000's, they stopped trying.

I don't think you understand what side stuff by Nintendo logic is. It's amiibo, Labo etc. Not dumping software on other platforms.

Oh I know exactly what they're saying, they want to push out into other things, they want some Disney shit. They're not going to stop making games though, but they will stop making hardware.

He is talking about diversifying their business and leveraging their IPs to expand as an entertain company.   Which was the long term strategy that Iwata had put in place.

Theme Parks, Movies etc.

In the long-term, perhaps our focus as a business could shift away from home consoles - flexibility is just as important as ingenuity."

Asked about how Nintendo intends to adapt to "fluctuations" in the industry, Furukawa added he was "thinking about little ways we can reduce that kind of instability" and said he'd "like to increase" Nintendo's smartphone game development to secure "a continuous stream of revenue". "We're also dabbling in theme parks and movies - different ways to have our characters be a part of everyday life. I'm anticipating a strong synergy like that," he said.

I believe the theme parks are already being built in Japan and the US... and they have several movies in  the works  already.
