It's not really "another system" per-se... it's basically... a low spec PC. They already take into consideration low spec PCs every single day. That's why we have quality settings. Developers could target the thing if it becomes popular. If Valve produces evidence that the games are played and popular on the Deck, then it could prompt them to optimize for it in the future. I guess it is possible for them to create a 'steamdeck' preset to go along with the typical low/medium/high settings. But then, that would have its own challenges especially as we get into current gen only games that are more demanding. For example, take BF2042. If the steamdeck is comparable to a One X in hardware, then how could they possibly get 128 player multiplayer working on it? They would either have to create an entirely different steamdeck exclusive version of the game separate from the standard PC version, or they would have to scale it down to the point where it would look like an early 360 game. There is no good compromise in a case like that.

Either with this iteration, they've hit the right price/performance ratio, and provide enough value for the customer in todays market... and the device begins to sell really well. Or they don't... and it fails to move any needle. If the former happens, you could see developers CONSIDER optimizing specifically for the device segment. By that I mean the "handheld PC" market. Even then it might not be the Deck specifically... but in that case, it's up to Valve, with a successful product, to push and grow the market.. and that involves working with developers. If the latter happens, then the device will just exist for the hardcore, and devs will just continue to ignore it and create their games with PC in mind as usual.. and games that work on the device will work, and the ones that don't, won't. So really... it depends on whether Valve has the right product here or not. Kinda like how Nintendo had with the Switch.. it was the right product at the right time at the right price. Then you should've never called a portable PC, and act like it was a PC on the go. You didn't compare it properly. This performance is EXACTLY what I was predicting, and you were straight-up denying it. Compared to the Switch................its not really that impressive. We're talking about 4.75 years apart. The Valve Steam Deck appear to only achieve about double the power. So, they're not even keeping up with Moore's law.
Mr. Impossible 411
9 hours ago, Remij said: It should be compared to it's competition.. before anything else. This thing blows away the Switch, and that's even considering that games on Switch are designed specifically for the hardware using the absolute lowest level coding possible. The device itself is extremely powerful for what it is. No doubt about it. You have to consider that games are running on linux through Proton compatibility.. so the CPU is doing extra work their that native linux games won't have. I'm not saying that fixes anything... but it's something to consider. There will also be improvements to the device firmware, improvements to game software, improvements to the OS, to Proton..ect. It's still early. It will be interesting to compare performance between SteamOS and Windows on the device. Also, if the device is popular enough, you could see developers also develop Steam Deck optimized branches of their games, taking the hardware into closer consideration. Valve will definitely be pushing this out to developers, as they see this as a way to expand PC gaming into the handheld market. Lol you spent more time to defend this thing than people would spend playing it.

jehurey 3,241
I mean, when you think about the fact that Nvidia created and MANUFACTURED the Tegra X1 back in the summer of 2015. And they sold Nintendo their UNUSED stock of Tegra X1 processors back in 2016, and Nintendo didn't release the Switch until March 2017. We're really not even talking about 4.75 years difference in hardware. These AMD 5000 series APU's just came out within the past two months. We're literally talking about Tegra X1's that were manufactured in Summer of 2015 versus AMD 5000 series APUs that were manufactured in Summer of 2021. Hardware processors that are literally six years apart in terms of manufacturing date. And that's the best the Steam Deck can do over the Nintendo Switch? That's a failure. Twinblade★ 3,933
Also, the battery life needs to be mentioned as it’s looking to be a big problem. Giantbomb played Doom Eternal for 90 minutes, and that dropped the battery life down to 30%. Another editor from The Verge played Witcher 3 for the same amount of time, and that also almost fully depleted the battery. so it looks like the portability is going to be hampered by the fact that you need to have an outlet or other power source nearby if you want to play demanding games. These Gaben-fanboys will make excuses for that. Like say "so what I can just leave it plugged into a wall outlet at my house" Which would defeat the entire purpose of a handheld. But not only that, it has a 8000mAh battery, which is almost double the amount of Switch's 4210mAh battery. Yet in REAL games, and not basic indie games that don't push graphics, that thing can only last 2 hours. And then you have to factor the part that you now have to CHARGE an 8000mAh battery. If you use a regular charger (and what are the chances that Valve goes cheapo and doesn't give you a 45W or even a 25W charger, but a standard cheapass 15W charger) it would take over 3 hours to charge a handheld that you can only play real games for 120 minutes. "buh I'll git a battery banK!"
